October 8, 2016 - There are few chateaux that age like Barton does and luckily this wine was a good testament to that. Despite its age, this really took 20 minutes in the decanter to sort itself out and kept improving for the first 45 minutes. After that, it held steady for an hour after that until we finished the bottle. The nose was beautifully Barton and had the powdery texture that comes with this sort of age; dried cherries, cedar, pencil, beef blood, earth - eventually white flowers as well. The tannins have gone to velvet now and it glides across the palate. The more I think back on this, the more I realize how much I enjoyed it. No doubt this was better 20 years ago, but I found it a pleasure to drink now. This bottle had a high shoulder fill with a firm cork so I would be very careful about bottles in less-than-optimal condition at this point.
