Community Tasting Notes 5

July 6, 2021 - A Koshu from vineyards grown on the hills of Kayagatake mountain, located on the northwestern part of the Yamanashi basin. 11,5% alcohol, 2 g/l residual sugar, 5,8 g/l acidity.

Neutral, pale, almost colorless whitish-green color. Quite restrained nose with delicate aromas of ripe apple, some smoky notes of reduction, light floral notes of white flowers and a hint of melon. The wine is dry, somewhat neutral and relatively light-bodied on the palate, yet not without sense of breadth. Delicate flavors of zesty citrus fruits, fresh spicy red apple, some sappy herbal notes, a little bit of smoky reduction and a leesy hint of savory autolytic character, or perhaps a bit of evolved nutty character? The acidity feels nicely balanced with the body and the fruit. The finish is clean, somewhat neutral and rather long with dry flavors of fresh apple, some leesy notes, a little bit of crunchy white fruit, light saline notes, a hint of savory spice and a touch of stony minerality.

A pretty classic and harmonious Koshu, made in the quite typical Japanese style: the wine is fresh, clean and neutral, yet showing good sense of balance and lovely, understated sense of nuance. This is definitely not a flashy wine, but instead one that whispers rather than sings. I can imagine this wine could continue to improve, but drinks quite wonderfully right now. Perhaps not that memorable a wine on its own, but goes really well with delicate Japanese dishes that don't call for a bold or robust wine. Good value in a restaurant at 8,90€ for a 12 cl glass, but perhaps a bit pricey at its retail price of 29,29€.

July 4, 2018 - My first japanese wine. Subtle nose of apple and a whiff of mineral. Medium bodied, bone dry, tight with refreshing acidity, delivering discreet green apple flavors with a tiny hint of mineral. Elegant subtlety. I like the firm and austere style. Still a bit simple and underwhelming. Not quite worth the spend of 29€ but a nice experience.

November 17, 2017 - Taurus Wines, UK, Winter wine tasting. This is possibly my first opportunity to taste a Japanese wine. The catalogue suggests that "Most Koshus tend to taste like over priced pinot grigo......" And, at £18, so was this one! Silver colour. Mandarins. Nice balance. A pleasant enough wine, but not any better than a decent pinot grigo at half the price.

October 31, 2017 - This is good, very precise, but does not wow. A reliable light white that could go easily with not too rich fish or chicken dishes.

Smoky nose, floral, touch candy, so perfumed!
Really pure and graceful on the palate
    Long and pure
    Excellent stuff
