November 21, 2023 - Nose: Pickle juice, beets, and green tobacco on the nose. A bit of cherry comes in as this opens, but lots of pickled notes. Palate: Much better palate than nose. Great red fruit, eucalyptus and sage notes. Bit of leather and cedar. Finish: Tart and a bit lacking for finishing depth.

Two bottles opened and this was consistent. I would recommend drinking up. This has evolved into an odd place, and does not buck the reputation of the vintage.

October 9, 2021 - Mid-Aged Cabernet Sauvignon Lunch (Mostly Double Blind) (Pixca - Highland Park IL): Magnum. All black fruit with savory spice and very good balance coming across in a Bordeaux-like fashion. Good enough weight, very good length, with some sneaky power on its expanding finish. A wine I recall enjoying less when younger, circa 2005

August 7, 2021 - The 1998's have proven to be one of the great Napa vintages after enough time in the cellar... The 1998 Spottswoode Cabernet was remarkable. With 23 years of age, this bottle had plenty of life left. Beautiful notes of dried tobacco, spice box, black and red fruit, anise, dried herbs with a hint of graphite, this wine was in great shape. 1998 Spottswoode Cab is everything you'd want and expect from a classically built, well aged bottle of St. Helena Cabernet!

May 8, 2021 - Feels younger than more recent old world reds we’ve had...
    Nose: Fresh cherries, not complex
Light, almost flowery, pure, evolving into more tannins on the finish...much lighter than more recent Cali cabs

Not super complex but great flavor and not your typical california cab. Very good but not memorable

  • CK2Worlds Does not like this wine:

March 28, 2020 - Opened this bottle which we had bought at a school auction a few years ago. Cork was tricky to remove. Wine smells a bit funky and reminds me of a port wine. Didn’t like it much I have to say. We had opened a ‘98 Heitz a couple years ago which tasted exactly like you’d want an aged Napa Cab to taste - difference to this one is like day and night.
