October 17, 2018 - Red Loire including some Clos Rougeard: Lighter and sharper than '02 Poyeux we had alongside. Beautiful but not sure if it is a good QPR any more.

January 11, 2014 - Proven a fool again, with respect to the Clos. While this shows a very satisfying level of development, it's still got all kinds of gas in the tank. It shows a bit thin upon the initial pour, with a finish clipped by brett. It needs hours of decanting to flesh out and for the brett to go into hiding. Then shows blood/iron, fresh cut nicotiana flower, soil. sweat. Languid, soft, round. A bit watery on the back.

Quelle finesse ! « «Un bourgogne, sans passeport ».

November 16, 2013 - Initially bretty and closed, but as always with air this blossoms into a classic Clos that seems to be approaching its peak. Ripe blue and red fruits, tobacco, dried porcini, salt pork, with juicy acidity. Unfortunately the brett gives the wine a slightly metallic character on the finish. This is not yet at the heights achieved by the 2001, but it has more material and potential to start with. However I don't remember the brett being as prominent at this stage of development in the 2001. If the brett moves into the background with continued development (that's a big if) this should be spectacular in another couple of years.

(Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny) Slightly bricking medium dark red violet color with 6 millimeter clear meniscus; tart currant, tart cassis, ox blood nose with a touch of menthol; silky textured, tart currant, tart cassis, herbaceous palate with herbal edges, minerality; medium-plus finish (group's WOTF)

Rockss and Fruit

(Clos Rougeard) So Burgundian but so apprently Cabernet Franc. This wine had a panoply of spice and herbs on the nose but also dazzling vivid cherry fruit after aeration. There were so many layers that kept coming out of the woodwork as the wine continually aerated. Drank it out of my new Ravenscroft Grand Cru Burgundy glasses and they really did the trick. The nose was incredibly evocative due to the large size of the glasses. Palate was extremely elegant and soft yet there was fantastic acidity and focus. The finish was long..the fruit was powerful and concentrated but never felt heavy. This was just a baby now but is built for the long haul. This will transform any Cabernet Franc hater into a lover . . . . .
