December 1, 2017 - Made from non-teinturier Saperavi variety, Saperavi Budeshuri. Vinified in kvevris with a completely hands-off method, no sulfites used. 12,5% alcohol.
Very slightly translucent black cherry with a subtle, youthful blueish hue. Ripe, pure and aromatic nose with really fruit-forward character that reminds me a lot of Northern Rhône naturalist Syrah wines without the peppery character of Syrah; there are vibrant notes of brambly blackberries and fresh blackcurrants, some boysenberries, a little bit of charred game meat and a hint of dusty earth. Despite the naturalist character, there is no funk or other wild characteristics to speak of. The wine is dry, dense and moderately full-bodied on the palate, yet it is surprisingly approachable for a kvevri wine. There are extremely juicy and ripe yet somewhat tart notes of dark berries, freshly pressed blackcurrant and chokeberry juice (without any sweetness), a little bit of ripe boysenberries, light peppery spice, hints of herbal bitterness and a touch of dusty earthiness. Overall the wine feels somewhat mineral with this kind of angular rocky character that seems to work as a stand-in for the tannins that are conspicuously mellow for a Saperavi. Overall the wine is crunchy and high in acidity with somewhat extracted feel, yet it doesn't come across as harsh or overdone at all - which seems to hold true for most of kvevri wines. Overall the wine feels remarkably "effortless" and really drinkable in style. The finish is very fruit-forward and a bit tannic, with dry, somewhat mineral and slightly tart aftertaste of sour plums, some boysenberries and juicy dark forest berries and a hint of herbal bitterness. The wine seems to end with a lifted touch of wild volatile complexity.
A very lovely, pure and finely-tuned Saperavi that doesn't come across as overly extracted, brooding and aggressive, but instead very vibrant, delicate and pretty. Taking into account this was a natural wine, this was one of the least wild and funky naturalists I've had in a long time - the focus here was solely on the purity of fruit and approachability without the wine coming across as excessively polished or stripped of its Georgian nature. With a lot of breathing the wine started to show a bit of "wild" character but even then the wine was very fine and pure, so nothing to the extent of the funkier Georgian wines. From its very fruit-forward nature you could guess this was a natural wine, but if served blind, you probably wouldn't think that straight away because the wine is so "clean". Tasty and balanced stuff. Good value at 22,90€.1 person found this helpful Comment
