July 1, 2021 - Grand Parents Are Great!

Don’t get me wrong, most parents are great too; just in a slightly different way. While my parents were teaching me how to become a man (I think they did a good job) and so many other life skills I would need to know, my grandparents had the luxury of spoiling me. Too many ice cream sodas at their quaint Wisconsin Soda Fountain, Gas Station, and BnB (for the record, they were cabins out back they rented out). Still, they didn’t have the burden and the requirement of so many life teaching moments.

Anyway, I have to give thanks to my grandparents for the love they gave and the nourishment I received; even if it did contribute to my expanded waistline as a child.

For this post, and the wine I’m reviewing, a grandparent's legacy goes back just a little farther, to a great-great-great-grandfather by the name John Lewelling who established a farmstead in the St. Helena area of Napa Valley in 1864 and is now the Lewelling Vineyards.

The great-great-great-granddaughter, Haley Wight, while still helping to run the Lewelling family business, she and her husband, Erik Dodd, began their winery, Hayfork, with Haley as the winemaker and the subject of this post

Hayfork Cabernet Sauvignon Lewelling Ranch 2014

Sourced from the family’s Lewelling Ranch Vineyards, this beautiful wine begins with a journey of fragrances of loads of dark berry, that transform into similar notes on the palate; full-bodied with dark blueberry/raspberry fruit that delights into a smooth, delicate, and slightly spiced finish that makes you wanting more.

It is obvious by the exacting quality and the outstanding wines being made by Haley, that the acorn didn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to knowing and making excellent wine, and while 2014 is not likely to be available, any of the newer vintages should be equally as desirable. Their newer wine, the Field Select Cabernet, while a little harder to obtain, is a must-have for serious Cab drinkers.

For now, I’m sitting back and savoring the wine and thinking about my grandparents and the love we shared; might I suggest you do the same?

    Cheers

For the record, I’m talking MY grandparents; I realize that many an individual may have been raised by their grandparents and may share in a parent’s responsibility.

October 10, 2020 - This is in a great place now. Very impressive for the money. From the first glass this carries some weight and richness. Blue and black fruit dominate with still some dominant tannins but way more in balance than a few years ago. Drink or hold
