Community Tasting Notes 5

December 28, 2023 - Gold coloured, heady nose of wax and almond, some floral notes. Mouth a hot mess. Fruitless, bitter and caramelised. Alcohol pokes out. Not nice. Down the sink.

December 5, 2022 - Now mid to full gold in appearance. Nose of honey and flowers and marmalade (almost a botrytis element?); also a nutty, creamy edge to the aroma. In the mouth this is full weight, viscous and savoury. Marzipan, vanilla, smoke lead with the somewhat tropical fruit following. Again the floral element, is it honeysuckle? This is now firmly in food-essential territory. Bitter edge to the finish, a bit of glycerine texture and maybe just a touch of alcohol bite. No guzzler, this. But plenty to contemplate and lots of ways to pair this with strong flavours. We had it with a powerful vegetable tagine and sesame coated fish cakes. Each bite picked out a new element of the wine. No idea about its stage of evolution but I wouldn’t leave mine too much longer. Maybe save one for the 30s just to see.

December 7, 2021 - Weighty, unctuous and rather two-faced. It has a pretty, floral and tropical richness. It also has an almond bitterness which can pucker the mouth if you match it with the wrong food. I’ll be generous and say that the opulent side wins out.

May 2, 2020 - Lightweight as a viognier, slightly over oaked, but perfectly good as an aperitif.

December 7, 2017 - The third of six wines drunk on my fiftieth birthday. You've got to love Condrieu. A practically flawless region. Tiny, focused exclusively on Viognier, and easily the best place in the world for this instantly recognisable variety. This wine is still young, and has two decades in it - I'm sure of this. I've aged much lesser Viogniers for over a decade and they just get better and better. The Domaine Pichon, in this super vintage, has the power, concentration, sugar and acidity to age and age into something wonderful. Currently it offers soaring aromas of peaches, butterscotch, vanilla, and dried apricots, and it is so big and generous and thick and flavoursome - utterly delicious. Almost like a dessert wine, but actually went very well with fish. It's bold and impressive, but has enough tightness and definition to maintain poise and elegance. Very good indeed.
