March 17, 2024 - Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): Veering a bit over-the-top for me here. Predominantly black fruit, but the palate feels unbalanced given how much alcohol this seems to display on the back end. A slight bitterness further detracts.

November 3, 2023 - An older than usual vintage for me.
Initially opened up with an old US style (and Bordeaux 2003) slightly soft and ripe with just a touch of prune stew but not bad, just a little compared to a normal Cayuse .
Does settle down a bit but the energy and Cayuse meat, animal and funk which makes the wines seems to be slumbering.

Still very enjoyable and giving plenty of fruit and power. A very good wine but very sensible and softened from what’s expected
Maybe of its time - not as good as the last ten years vintages for sure

July 14, 2023 - Flawed. Cork was very dry and wine was oxidized, all stewed and over-ripe fruits. Nice color, but very distinct meniscus at the rim of the glass.
Could not finish even one glass. Darn.

June 4, 2023 - This wine is in a great spot right now though not sure I’d wait a lot longer. Common themes among our tasting group: soy, hoisin, olive tapanade, salinity. Incredible nose and long finish. Well integrated tanins. Signature funk but not distracting. I don’t think I’d had one of Christophe’s wines with this much age, very well done.

June 21, 2020 - Method: tasting blind; Cab glass; slightly chilled

Look: deep garnet and tawny towards the edge; tons of slow legs showing high viscosity; a bit of turbidity or fine sediment

Nose: sun dried tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, we forest floor, wet herbs, a little funky, mushroom consume; very expressive nose

Palate: baked and dried red (and maybe some blue) fruit, sun dried tomato, chocolate hazelnut, mushroom; long finish of old leather, mushroom, mint, and dried leaves; dry; full body; low fine tannins; medium- acid; amazing silky mouthfeel

Overall thoughts: This was my first Cayuse and I hope to have a lot more! The balance and mouthfeel were both amazing. The flavor profile was pretty different and quite complex, but potentially a bit past its prime for me. Really great wine!

EDIT: A friend obtained this at auction and now that I'm reading the other notes, I wonder if this bottle was stored less than ideally as I feel it showed more mature than these other notes suggest and more mature than what I'd expect for a quality Syrah of this age. However, since this is my first Cayuse, I really have no idea where the wine started.

(Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard) From magnum - dark red violet color; lifted, tart roasted plum, herbs, bacon fat, charcoal nose; tart roasted plum, herbs, bacon fat, charcoal palate; reminiscent of a ripe Northern Rhone; medium-plus finish
