Community Tasting Notes 2

May 21, 2013 - Popped and poured. Served in Riedel Vinum Burgundy stems @ 60 F Clear garnet- tawny of medium pale intensity and medium-light body. Nose was fully developed -past it's prime with red cherries, wet leaves, resinous oak. On the palate this wine was well balanced with medium acid to frame the nuanced fruit, and wet earthiness. This is a wine seemed past it's prime maturity but it was hanging in there. The initial signs were slightly oxidized and I was expecting this wine to rapidly decline but to my surprise it opened up and blew off it's initial funky character. This wine peaked at 1 hour opening time.. This was very pleasant surprise. Santa Barbara pinot of pedigree can age. 21 years old and hanging in there. If you are fortunate enough to have bottle in your cellar drink up. I pick up my bottle on a Wine Commune auction for $ 8.00. The gamble paid off this time ..This wine is on the decline but still Outstanding

July 2, 2007 - Pulled the cork out in 2 pieces, it was soaked all the way through and crumbly - not a good sign. This was poured double blind to the tasting group - poured a hazy garnet with significant bricking. Showing clear signs of age. On the nose, this wine performed fantastically - the nose was showing clear tertiary aromas - forest floor, leather, spice complexity. It still showed very fresh though, and there was still some fruit left. On the palate, the mouthfeel was light, but the flavors were ethereal and harmonized. It was spicy and vinous - I am amazed at how this showed. Really a special wine that had everyone stumped. I have had great luck with these old Farrell Pinots.
