September 12, 2019 - Opened very slowly. Dark fruit and cocoa. Medium body.....must be off judging by the other notes....

September 1, 2019 - Still a striking purple in color with only a hint of bricking at the edge. What a sexy wine. Smoky black cherries and rich plums that absolutely saturate the palate. Perfect balance with just the right amount of acidity to keep it fresh. A terrific wine.

August 17, 2019 - This wine continues to impress - one of my favorites of the vintage and a great value. Now that others from ‘96 are starting to drink well, this classic claret refuses to take a back seat. The color still contains some garnet. The nose imclides loads of ripe cassis and cedar. Bright, full, complex - combines the vintage’s acid backbone with terrific fruit. An enticing recipe. (95)

August 4, 2019 - Bricking at the edge, blood red core.
Nose is not overly expressive - notes of tobacco, dried fruit, red cherry, spice, and wet rock. Primal.
On the palate, full bodied, with moderate tannin and medium high acidity. There’s a nice core of fruit but this is still quite taught. With only about an hour of air, I think this will improve. It’s got years ahead of good drinking. Revisit in another 2-3 years.

(Chateau Léoville-Poyferré St Julien) A dark red-purple wine. There are aromas of dense, sweet blackcurrant fruit, cherries and minerals on the nose. The palate offers plenty of sweetness and a full, rounded texture. There's a nice weight, lots of fruit and ripe tannins in the finish. Good acidity. This is nowhere near as hard and backward as when last tasted in April 2001, and is clearly coming out of its shell. Nevertheless I would recommend another two or three years before trying another.

(Chateau Léoville-Poyferré St Julien) A great, deep purple colour leads to a nose of cassis fruit, with a classic stony-mineral St Julien edge appearing, not present on last tasting. A fruit-packed palate, with lovely texture and impressive structure. Less austere than last time, but still a real keeper. Expect to cellar for 10 years or more.

(Chateau Léoville-Poyferré St Julien) A dense and dark wine. Powerful, dark blackcurrant fruit. Slightly hard and austere. Similarly austere on the palate, with deep, rich fruit and a good tannic backbone. A big yet balanced wine.
