Community Tasting Notes 3

January 18, 2008 - bit of brett greets the nose but it is well integrated into the gamey, leathery nose that offers top notes of violets and herbs. A big and sweetly fruited entry leads to a rich, smooth midpalate that is loaded with soft, sweet tannins and very well balanced acidity. Big cherry fruit upfront turning earthy and chewy on the midpalate as the formidable tannins kick in. The finish is long and structured. Surprisingly this needs a fair amount of time still but is enjoyable today for it brashly youthful character.

October 11, 2006 - Certainly drinking well with nic ely integrated acidity and soft tannins. the merlot adds some surmatuity notes on the nose that meld well with the spicy oak nuances. Just a hint of astringency on the palate keeps everything lively, the oak is almost completely absorbed, the fruits start out quite red but by the end of the bottle are verging off to a blacker range. Finish is a bit abrupt but all in all a very nice super-sangio at or near peak. Try again in a year.

December 17, 2005 - I was very much looking forward to this bottle, which I hadn't sampled since I bought the first of three bottles...this wine still opens up with that barnyard, animal, funkiness initial impression, with dare I say garrigue in an Italian wine, touch of mintiness with a nice dollop of oak to round everything out...on the palate this wine is all spry and rambunctious (sp?), full-bodied, mid palate dry tannins, earthy, smoky, and extremely reminiscent of the southern Rhone with herbs, and a baked fruit quality that doesn't detract. Delicious. ****.
