Community Tasting Notes 10

April 26, 2024 - My note from last year applies in terms of this wine’s specific characteristics and flavor profile, though I will say the performance this time around was absolutely beautiful on day one (a healthy Coravin pull). It was next to a 2015 Colgin Tychson, which was less elegant and more angular initially - though the 2015 after a ton of air really transformed into a phenom. This 2016 was less overtly gushing than when I had it last year (in a blind of other top Napa 2016s).

The 2016 had a poise that aptly counterbalanced the waves of dark fruit, chocolate, and black soil flavors. Two days later it was put in a lineup of 2019 Napa uppercrusters and still showed well. I did prefer it on day one when I had more opportunity to appreciate its nuances. I think this is a very fine wine that is also very generous in its fruit flavor expansion. It has a brooding sense about it and also a freshness that is compelling. High class yummy type wine. Drink with some air or hold for another 5-7++ years.

April 14, 2024 - Champers and Napa Cabs Blind - Fun Times! (Chateau Simms): I believe this wine received about a 2 hour Slo-O.

This was in a blind line up of some very prestigious 2019 Napa reds (and one 2016 thrown in), specifically:

    2019 MacDonald
2019 Kinsman Eades La Voleuse Du Chagrin
2019 Kinsman Eades Anjea Sleeping Lady Vineyard
    2019 Colgin Tychson Hill
    2019 Realm Absurd
    2019 Scarecrow
    2019 Harlan
    2019 Myriad Elysian
    2019 La Pelle Res
    2019 Magnificent 7
    2019 Cliff Lede Songbook
    2016 Colgin Tychson Hill

2016 Colgin Tychson Hill - I believe this wine benefitted from the additional three years of bottle age. My notes were the wine was elegant, silky and easy to drink. It was fruit forward (red and dark) and balanced. Seemed slightly angular at this stage and will definitely benefit from some additional age. Solid 96 today (out of 98) but should gain points with more age.

April 14, 2024 - Another beauty. Colgin when it is good, never disappoints.

April 14, 2024 - Eyes Wide Shut - Day 2 (A quiet place): Nose: Fresh red fruits with a bit of citrus like tangerines, kinda surprising there.

Palate: Dark, spiced and bitter earth with fresh red fruits. Gentle tree bark and wet stones.

A bit generous in the fruits department, which is kind of a shock to me. I would've expect this to be a bit more elegant and fresh. Again, might've just needed some more time. The score may not be fair.

June 1, 2023 - 2016 Napa Cults Blind - and a few Champs and such for fun: Juicy and rich, with black fruit dominating the profile, the Colgin Tychson was quite the giving specimen. I suspected it might be a Colgin, but went with believing it was the M7 (erroneous as that guess was). Of all the wines, this was the most gushing of the group. With time and air, gorgeous bitter chocolate and earth notes surfaced, completely elevating the execution of flavor and saving it from becoming too round on the edges. A fantastic wine that takes a bit of time to come into form. For now, the opulence plays some tug-o-war with the overall cadence of its delivery.
