January 21, 2022 - Youthful and I felt rather closed. Hmm. Not giving as much as I'd like, but what it does give smells lovely. More time needed - even though that seems hard to believe? I have another, so I'll find out.

August 27, 2021 - Another slightly tired bottle. Fruit is very rich and a little porty almost. Lacks the energy of its youth. Did get a littler better with air but this is going downhill.

October 3, 2020 - Another oxidised bottle. Porty,, soupy. That's 2 of 5 so far. Disappointing.

October 20, 2019 - 4/6. A slight curate’s egg. Lovely rich and deep nose to start. On pouring this remained but with a very slightly stewed note in the middle. Proper Chianti’s acidity in the finish so better with food. Lovely long finish but the stewed note remained. Baked earth and dark fruit with a herby top note and grappa tang kept this interesting, especially the note of cow’s urine on grass...still enjoyable though. After about 3 hours this cleaned up a lot and the stewed note went. Then very clean and cherry dominated. Rather interesting bottle and to my mind better then most Brunelli I’ve had.

July 13, 2019 - This bottle was free of the odours of incipient decay which I found in my bottle of 3 years ago. It tasted quite elderly for its 18 years but sound and in good health and, as befits a leading Chianti Classico, that meant a fine bottle. It was medium bodied and dark complexioned showing well matured fruit, balsamic touches, forest floor, hints of English fruit cake, soft velvety texture and fine acidity to provide good balance with a decently long finish and resolved tannins. Very good but drink up soon if you still have bottles.

(Marchesi Mazzei Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli) Despite its age, this wine is still deeply saturated in ruby color, which, along with the flavors and aromas, testifies to its blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sangiovese is aged for 16 months in new French barriques, the Cabernet for 18 months. The highly perfumed, complex nose incorporates notes of fireplace, cedar, freshly turned black earth, leather, tar, lilies, Creamsicle, blackcurrant, and Morello cherry. Medium-bodied with a plush center and flavors of tarry earth and stewed fruits, the wine is buttressed by gripping fruit and oak tannins. The finish is long, with a salty sea-spray note and drying oak tannins. Special Report: Chianti Classico
