Community Tasting Notes 2

March 21, 2018 - Made from biodynamically farmed (uncertified) grapes sourced from a lieu-dit located amidst 1er Crus. 13% alcohol.

Pale, yellow-toned lime green color. Ripe and rich nose with fruit-forward and moderately toasty - yet not oak-dominant - aromas of sweet yellow apples, some roasted spices, a little bit of honeysuckle and a hint of fruit candy. The description might not do justice to the nose of the wine which is very nuanced and attractive by all accounts. The oak influence is quite noticeable, yet the wood aromas don't obfuscate the fruit, instead only feeling very fine-tuned and adding lovely complexity to the background. The wine is dry, full-bodied and quite ripe with somewhat round and broad mouthfeel and complex flavors of ripe red apples, somewhat tart peach, some smoke, a little bit of creaminess, light mineral bitterness, a hint of sweet oak influence and a touch of savory wood spice. Overall the wine feels surprisingly savory, serious and high-toned for a 2015 with the bitterness nicely offsetting the ripeness of the fruit and the high acidity keeping the structure well in check. The finish is firm, lively and dry with long and vibrant flavors of creaminess, tart lemony citrus fruits, some butter, a little bit of Granny Smith apple and apple peel bitterness, a hint of peanut butter and a touch of steely minerality.

A wonderful, nuanced and serious Meursault that really disregards the notion that white Burgundies made in 2015 are soft, fruity and flabby. The precision here is remarkable, but that is not to say the warm vintage doesn't show here - the fruit is definitely ripe and there is some sense of size and weight to the fruit. Still, the wine is very high-toned, almost bone-dry and the minerality and balanced bitterness keep the sweeter aspects impressively in check. Although the wine shows some subtle buttery hints typical of Meursault wine, this is far from those overdone butter bombs one might associate with Meursault. Overall this wine is a non-Cru Meursault that eclipses many a Cru-level Meursault - especially from 2015. Unfortunately, at approximately 55€, the wine is also priced like one. Drinking wonderfully now, but will keep easily for years. Beautiful stuff.

February 19, 2018 - WSET Level 2 - Day 2 (Pialligo Estate, Canberra, ACT, Australia): The appearance is clear and pale lemon in colour.

The nose is clean, with a medium(+) intensity. There are well-defined aromas of oak (toast, charred wood), stone fruit (peach, white nectarine), and subtle citrus fruit (lemon). The wine is youthful.

On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+) acidity, medium alcohol, and medium body. The flavours have a medium(+) intensity and show notes of oak (charred wood, vanilla) and stone fruit (peach). The finish has a medium length.

This is a good quality wine. The flavours are concentrated and have a great balance with the alcohol and the acidity. The wine shows primary and secondary characters, is enjoyable, and has a finish with good length.

This wine drinks well now, and has potential for further ageing due to the level of acidity and fruit concentration.
