Community Tasting Notes 4

October 7, 2019 - The grapes are sourced from organically farmed vineyards in the Montestefano Cru. Aged for 18 months in large oak botti casks. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted in a mini-vertical of Rivella Dolcettos 2017-2013.

Moderately translucent cherry red color with a deep core and somewhat brick-red rim. Dense, ripe and concentrated nose with complex and slightly herbaceous aromas of powdered bell pepper, brambly blackberries, some peppery spice, a little bit of olive and gamey tones, light smoky notes, an odd hint of popcorn and a touch of cherry marmalade. The wine is ripe, broad and full-bodied on the palate with intense and slightly sweet-toned flavors of red cherries, bloody game, some brambly raspberries, a little bit of ripe red gooseberries, light peppery tones, a hint of tart red plums and a touch of tangy apple. The wine is balanced despite its big size and obvious ripeness, thanks to its high acidity and firm, moderately grippy medium-plus tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. Although quite voluminous for a Dolcetto, the wine never feels weightly or particularly extracted. The finish is ripe yet quite dry an moderately grippy wiht intense, lengthy flavors of tart red plums, brambly blackberries, some juicy red fruits, a little bit of peppery spice, light spicy notes of savory wood and a tangy hint of red apple.

A very big and ripe yet also very firm and balanced Dolcetto that feels both more concentrated and still less extracted than the vintage 2016 sitting in the neighboring glass. The age seems to have done nothing but good to the wine, since it is the first vintage that isn't showing any of the sweet primary fruit flavors anymore, making the wine come across as more serious and complex than its younger counterparts. A well-made traditionalist Dolcetto that is still very young and most likely will reward prolonged cellaring. Probably needs another 10 or so years before hitting its apogee. Nice.

February 22, 2019 - Consistent with previous note.

February 18, 2018 - Pretty nose of cherries, gravel, violets, dried herbs. Classic but not a powerhouse, more on the elegant side with impeccable balance. Fruit driven with good lift on the palate.

April 7, 2017 - Plump and juicy with a good dose of acids running through the middle. Medium finish, with the complexity probably having developed as much as it's going to, so drink up. Chassis has some rounded edges, classic bitter on the final. Nice.
