Community Tasting Notes 5

May 20, 2024 - 20x Burgundy 2014 - 10 years on: Four 2014 whites, no notes taken. The A. Bichot Moutonne (88 points) showed good freshness and a fine citrus core but was ultimately uninteresting; perhaps more air would have revealed its depth. The C. Moreau Clos des Hospices (91 points) was rich and layered, clearly ahead of the Bichot, with good balance. The W. Fevre Les Clos (92 points) was my favorite Chablis, showing the most depth and promise but was not really open and ready. Yet, considering 2014 is hailed as a great Chablis vintage, I wouldn’t be tempted to buy or order any of these again. I’m still searching for my Chablis epiphany. To finish the tasting, we had a stunning V. Girardin Les Charmes (96 points). Multi-layered and highly precise from start to finish, with a beautiful popcorn/flint component, abundant fruit in all shapes, and the 2014 concentration and freshness... that balance. Wow.

May 10, 2024 - 2014 Burgundy 10years on, tasted blind: This was served at the end of the tasting. Medium yellow. Wonderful nose of popcorn, lemon curd, vanilla and yellow stone fruit. Generous palate, Grand Cru volume with excellent freshness. A very complete white Burgundy and the best white wine today.

August 4, 2023 - Hanging out on a Friday night (Richmond district): Sharp nose of bread and yeasty notes with a deep, fleshy yellow fruit.

The flavors were just a notch less exciting than what the nose seemed to promise. Dark and deep yellow fruits with subtle yeastiness, bitter straw flavors that coats the fruits lightly. There are flavors of tilled, dried earth on the palate as well.

Heavy on the fruits and round on the palate. Feel like it lacked just a bit of acidity or that might be because of the bit of age this has already.

December 24, 2022 - Another excellent bottle of this. Middleground between first maturity and still youthful freshness. Love it.

January 14, 2022 - Healthy lighter yellow-golden color. A little reticent at first, opens up with some more air. Notes of butter, nuts, lemon oil, orange zest, some wet stone minerality, a touch of smoke. It‘s medium-full bodied, but niceily balanced, has medium-high acidity and a very nice overall mouthfeel. Good length. This is a very nice, but not overly complex Meursault Charmes. It‘s still young, so the best might be coming in 2-3 years. It‘s always a thin line with white Burgundy…
