August 31, 2020 - Clos Sainte Madeleine must be the most beautifully located vineyard on the planet.
Good Cassis, not to be confused with the liqueur that goes into Kir (sorry if I am stating the obvious), is a treat, as the AOC only runs to 215 hectares, 67% white, 30% rosé and only 3% red. Amusingly Cassis claims to the first AOC in France, while Arbois claims the same. The fact is that both, along with Chateauneuf du Pape, Tavel and Monbazillac were all proclaimed on the same day, 15th May 1936. I guess that A comes before C so...
I struggled at first with this wine as it lacked freshness. The blend is unusual: 40% Marsanne, 30% Ugni Blanc (or Trebbiano if that makes you feel better), 25% Clairette (normally dismissed as lightweight only to be proved wrong by Château Rayas white!) and 5% Bourboulenc. Clearly the weight of the Roussanne dominates the other lighter varieties, which may explain the wine's evolution.
    Colour: Pale gold, bright, clear.
Nose: Full, ripe, musky at first, apricots, orange peel
Taste: Med body, v ripe, quite hot (only 13% ABV though), rounded, intense ripe fruit flavours, good acidity, long , dry finish, with almost resinous notes.
Is this a wine in transition as secondary flavours take over?

April 6, 2019 - Marsanne 45 %, - Clairette 20 %, Ugni blanc 30 % - Bourboulenc 5 %. I was rather underwhelmed by this. Slightly lacking in freshness. An interesting and unfavourable comparison to the Clos St Joseph Blanc 2015 from a couple of days ago (see separate note).

May 4, 2018 - A private lunch (Restaurant Het Roode Koper *, Leuvenum, NL): Slightly smoky reduction on the nose, elegant, complete, fresh and mineral, energetic, hay and salinity, flowers and citrus, hint of unripe peach, bitters provide grip, seamless and perfectly balanced, has line and length. Delightful, excellent terroir expression.
