Community Tasting Notes 40

December 29, 2021 - In great shape, very cloudy faded purple, unfiltered look; Cherry cough syrup, alcohol way out of balance almost like a fortified wine with ethanol notes; slick and smooth (see overdose of alcohol above), hot, a bit sweet and ripe; the quality on this shows through as it has purity and lovely mouthfeel and concentration, but the years weren't kind to this wine which was made at the pinnacle of big bad over-ripe and overly hot Pinots. Best with the Pork Chop at Rustic Canyon Kitchen w/S&L

February 13, 2021 - Big, full bodied, full throttle, CA pinot noir. Ripe, highly extracted style. Definitely not a casual sipping wine. Needs to be paired with robust cuisine. In this case achieved nice balance with Roast Whole Duck ala Orange. Not for the faint of heart or to be compared with a fine Burgundy. The bottle has been stored at 57 F since purchase and is surprisingly more youthful than I expected.

January 17, 2019 - Very ripe and warm, like a warm blueberry pie. Over extracts for my palate. Still had life and drinkable.

December 20, 2018 - Pleasant concentrated aromas of dark roasted burnt raisny plum fruits in a rich chunky style. Palate is showy although somewhat muted vs nose. Very ripe and warm initial attack fades quickly in the mouth. Somewhat hot and disjointed in the mid plate and finish almost like a grappa. As fruit has faded, the sense of alcohol is clearly pronounced. In other words a hot mess, but drinkable and far from dead.

I always wondered what would happen with these extreme styled wines with age and now I know. Drink these in there youth for the hedonism, to age them is a mistake as any secondary complexity of the grape is completely masked by the powerful alcohol.

June 12, 2016 - PeterK's review from 2014 was spot on. I was a bit surprised with how big, sweet and fruity this wine was at this stage.
