December 18, 2021 - 41 years young. Ullage to neck so a bit worried. Bought at auction. Cork crumbled and had to be Coravined out. Still dark garnet centre and rim bricked but not translucent. Still very alive. Very tertiary with a lightness to the body consistent with its 12% alcohol. Mocha and caramel hints, leather, leather and more leather. Sense of fully resolved tannins. Very easy to drink. Did not improve or fade over an hour- solid. I suspect given this is a legendary wine that it is in the gentle decline phase of its years but you couldn't taste that today. Imagine it under screwcap! i think GraemeG captured it perfectly in his note of 2019.

    May 5, 2021 - Served blind.
Ripe, black plummy fruit, leather, slight sour underpin, oak, cream and the tiniest smidge of cork taint. In the mouth it's savoury and juicy, lashings of tannic grip, leathery black hued fruit. Fairly monolithic.
I guessed South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon or Cab Sav/Shiraz blend 2001

February 22, 2020 - An absolute belter. Opened to celebrate my 40th at Navo in Fiji. A swirl of dark fruits, glorious tannins and such great spicy length. Will hunt down another bottle immediately for the 50th.

January 11, 2020 - Davyd's Birthday celebration at ES BK. Tasted blind. Cork crumbled. Thick sediments on side of bottle. Pop and poured. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Thin legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of cedar wood, integrated vanilla toast, dark red cherries, black cherries, blackberries, fresh earth, forest floor, graphite lead, dark soy sauce. Developed.
On the palate, dry, rounded high acidity, medium alcohol (12%), melted completely integrated tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury soy sauce, dark grilled herbs, cedar wood, red spice, dark red cherries, black cherries, blackberries, redcurrant, graphite. Long finish.
Outstanding quality. I was guessing top tier 1982 Left Bank Bordeaux!
    Drinking at a solid peak.
Turns out to be 61% Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Kalimna (Barossa) Shiraz. Spent 22 months in new American oak hogsheads.

October 14, 2019 - NobleRottersSydney - meant to be Grange (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): [Graeme] {cork, 12%} Half-soaked cork, which broke on extraction; double decant two hours before consumption. Level was just at the bottom of the neck. Penfolds’ first remake of the famous 1962 bottling: Coonawarra cabernet and Barossa shiraz. Fragrant, aged nose of soft old leather, with a bit of a cabernet accent, but never quite the cigar of Bordeaux. Seductive though. The palate is classic smeary old Australian red, in the Penfolds mould; leather and spice flavours, all tertiary, a mix of currant and spice, polished, smooth and lovely. I feared for some mustiness at first but it cleaned up with a bit of air; there are still medium powdery tannins, medium acid, with perhaps barely a touch of volatility. Silky medium weight, even if it is drying out just a little. The longer you tasted it, the better it got. As impressive as the old Granges, but with a slightly different accent. Can hold a while – with some risk – on this showing.
