Community Tasting Notes 3

July 17, 2023 - Holding up in 2023, but this wine, light in color, body, and texture, is close to a peak (I'm not sure on which side). Pleasant browning around the edges, flavor leaning quite dry, goes nice with an elegant and actually quite fruity concentration on the nose. I generally thought poorly of the 2015 Pinots from Anderson Valley/Mendocino Ridge on release, but it's nice to see that well-made wines like Phillips Hill came around.

May 9, 2023 - Ruby. Throughout its first day on the table, this showed quite a bit of spice and herbaceous note that overwhelmed the other aspects a bit. Enjoying the Baxter version much more, this was set aside and returned to the following evening. Day two showed very similarly to the Baxter if only slightly more subdued in the velvety texture and generosity of the dark red fruit. Nose and palate reflected the damp earth and spice, which followed through to the palate.

This isn’t the first time I’ve picked up a similar ‘harsh’ initial note on Valenti vineyard pinot (from various producers), and note that this particular vineyard is no longer being made by Philips Hill. It is encouraging that the edges rounded and the distraction mostly disappeared!

January 4, 2020 - I generally enjoy Phillips Hill wine; however, this bottling is light to the point of lacking any discernible structure. The nose is faint with just a slight hint of red fruit. The fruit is muted and the finish is short. Perhaps I was just too late on the draw on this one.
