August 16, 2022 - Deep golden and shimmering colour, followed by a nose of honey and some plums - What an invitation to enjoy this special XO!

Super smooth, very elegant and balanced, with chrysanthemum flowers and marmalade-like notes with a long finish. It really is quite hard to describe but for the use of the descriptor, hedonistic and such a privilege to get to try this.

Never tried a 90 year old cognac until last night.. and it was delightful. Very expensive, at over USD 600 per bottle, so my little pour must have been over USD 25! Grateful my buddies at my table gave me some of theirs, and this review comes from my memory of at least 2 glasses of Tesseron Cognac Lot No.29!

It was a true privilege to not only enjoy 3 delightful vintages of Pontet-Canet last night, 2006, 2008 and the magical 2016, but to wrap up the evening with a Cognac Tesseron Lot N° 29 XO Exception!

This along with the Pontet-Canet wines were presented by Matthieu Chapoutier, from the Tesseron Cognac and Pontet-Canet group, who was visiting Kuala Lumpur, followed by Penang and Ipoh too.

Alfred Tesseron and his family have been long time creators and curators of some of the finest XOs, or luxurious and very old aged Cognacs.

I had to look it up, but their vineyards are in the Cognac region of Grande Champagne, which came to the Tesseron stable back in the 19th century, by Abel Tesseron. His grandson is of course Alfred, along-which Alfred's brother Gérard manages the business today.

The Tesserons are of course better known to us winophiles, as the proprietors of the Bordeaux wineries, Château Pontet-Canet as well as Lafon Rochet.

It seems Cognac vineyards typically grow Ugni Blanc, but the Tesserons chose to plant and nurture this along with other historic varietals: Folle Blanche (Imparts finesse), and Collombard (Strength and complexity of flavours). It is these 3 grapes which are harvested, then vinified and distilled, each separately, then expertly blended. After which it is left to mature over many years in Tesseron’s 13th century cellars in Chateauneuf-sur-Charante (Located in South-west France, located in the heart of the Charente vineyards adjacent to Cognac and Jarnac).

Interesting fact - Did not realise Robert Parker actually rates Cognacs too, and happens to be one of his 100 pointers.

    Cassis, Kuala Lumpur - 16 Aug 2022

July 20, 2019 - This is a very pleasant Cognac, not as smooth as the aging would suggest but add a drop or two of distilled water and voilà! The heat goes away and the nuances come alive.
