March 17, 2024 - Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): I would far prefer the regular VT. Oak splinters everywhere -- this probably had more oak than all the other Rhones tonight combined. Bitter, astringent, and definitely not the way CdP should be made. That's why this is an experiment.

October 27, 2008 - our host provided this very rare cuvee thanks to his families involvement with the owners of the domaine, a rare treat of high generosity. thank you, kevin. i thought this wine had a firmer countenance/structure, and i preferred the softer, more forward regular la crau from the same vintage, although it represents a departure that is hardly worth criticizing. i preferred this over the 98 l'hippolyte.

October 27, 2008 - G7 (Kevin): Given to me by Henri Brunier of Vieux Telegraphe. A special wine not released to the general public that consists of 1/3 Grenache, 1/3 Syrah and 1/3 Mourvedre. Blended after fermentation and placed in 2 to 4 year old barrels. After 22 months, bottle unfiltered. Color of dark rubies. Dark berry fruit aromatics. Tastes of raspberry, chocolate, cherry, earth, barbecued meats and spice. Intensely bright fruit on the mid palate. Leaner acidity compared to the other wines in this flight. Impressive depth with a very elegant finish. From the back of the bottle (loosely translated from French): "An experimental cuvee of Domaine Vieux Telegraphe. L'Hippolyte is a tribute to Hippolyte Brunier (1849-1934) who started the domaine in the late 19th century by planting a plot of Grenache on the La Crau plateau in Bedarrides which at that time was called the Telegraphe Quarter. For one hundred years we strive to make every year better than the last, L'Hippolyte will continue to show us the way."
