January 13, 2001 - Half bottle purchased in Oporto at the cellar, Vila Nova de Gaia, in 1991. Hauled through Spain and France, back home (to America). A worthwhile experience.

    My (informal) translation:
Porto Cálem wines result from exceptional and unique harvests, such as 1983, 1997, 1997, 200 and 2002, produced from the best grapes that develop in ideal conditions (being normally referred-to as "classics"). After two years in carvalho pipes, the vintages are bottlled in our storage spaces in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the banks of the River Douro. Improving over decades, the bottle should be stored horizontally in a fresh and dark place. The true character of port wine will evolve over time. It is generally recommended that they are aged a minimum of 8 years, but they can be enjoyed with 50 or more years. When port vintages are young, they're intense, with an impressive inklike colour, accompanied with forest-fruit aromas (especially black raspberry and black cherry), with firm tannins and balanced structure. With ageing, they become less intense but more elegant, complex and with softer colour, aromas and body. Because the wines develop sediment, the bottle should be vertical for several hours before decanting. It is ideally served as a refreshment with strong cheeses.
