Even after a double decant for a few hours and a full decant for a few hours more, this stays in the friend zone for most of consumption. With food (turmeric pork medallions), the Riotte offers ample cut and verve, but from a flavor expansion standpoint, it is missing a few layers of complexity that hopefully some time in bottle can remedy. It was a good performance; it just wasn't an especially memorable one. Much less dynamic and showy than the last bottle I had back in 2020.

  July 23, 2020 - Wild and fresh strawberry-orange sorbet and stemmy brush notes compete with darker black cherry and plum skin flavors. Unresolved and raw indeed, but loaded with awesome stuffing and energy just waiting to burst out its reved-up and would-be ready complexity and concentration... as in 5-7 years more in bottle to be ready. Finishes in a lip-smacking surge; the back end is super grippy, but with notable pulsating primary flavors that elevate the profile. A fun and fascinating wine in the making. Hold until 2025-2027+. 94-95+ points.
  
  Even with its fun roller coaster ride personality, the Riotte is slightly less compelling than the outrageously complex Pruliers. Both wines (and even the lesser Auxey-Duresses) are all worthy 2016 1er Crus from T-M.

  June 6, 2020 - This 2016 Taupenot Merme Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte is one of the most polished wines in Morey Saint Denis. Dark and reserved array of sleek black cherry, leathery perfume, ripe and juicy stems. Medium bodied with lots of raw material. A great Pinot Noir for the autumn. Drink from 2025 to 2045. (87 /100)

  May 13, 2020 - This 2016 Taupenot Merme Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte is incredibly dark and concentrated, close to Grand Cru level. Luscious dark cherries, smoked minerals, lifted stems and meaty dark fruits of Morey Saint Denis / Gevrey Chambertin. Soft tannins already but needs a few more years to let the wine better integrate itself. (86/100)
