December 11, 2018 - Indigena Tasting with Ian D'Agata in Houston. Made with 100% Barbera grapes, which are air-dried for 4-6 weeks before pressing. This apparently is the first Barbera made in this style. Medium (+) ruby with a purple hue. No sign of aging. The nose is medium (+) with ripe blackberry jam, ripe candied cherries, violets, dried herbs and spices. No oak. The palate is dry, but with several grams of residual sugar, which are nicely balanced by the medium (+) to high acidity. The tannins are at best medium, due to the appassimento process and aging in stainless steel. The alcohol is medium (+) (13.5%). The appassimento process provides a sweeter, rounder, more approachable expression of Barbera while retaining its juicy, tartness. It should appeal to those looking for an easy-drinking, budget alternative to Amarone. Drink now, not likely to improve with further aging.

    June 7, 2018 - An appassimento-method Barbera from Piedmont? Righty. 13,5% alcohol, 14 g/l residual sugar, 6,1 g/l acidity.

Opaque black cherry appearance. Very juicy and sweet nose with aromas of cherry juice, some strawberry jam and a hint of blueberries. The wine is medium-bodied and medium-dry on the palate with flavors of sour cherries, blackberry jam, a hint of tart lingonberries and a touch of blueberries. The mouthfeel is soft and juicy, but the relatively high acidity keeps the wine from tasting too sweet and flabby. There are really no tannins to speak of. The finish is lively, slightly sweet and mellow with medium-long flavors of sour cherries, some tart lingonberries and a hint of jammy dark berries. Typical of Barbera, there's no tannic grip whatsoever.

I expected this to be horrible, undrinkable sugary mess, but surprisingly enough, the high acidity of Barbera actually manages to lend some sense of balance to the wine. Sure, the wine is a crowdpleaser aimed for the un-geeky end of wine consumers with very simple, jammy flavors, but there's still a surprisingly nice streak of freshness and crunchy red-fruited energy from the high acidity. Overall the wine tastes just too jammy and sweet for my taste, but I must say that this definitely isn't the worst offender among these sugary appassimento wines that are so ridiculously popular here in the Nordics. Overpriced at 14,98€.
