January 13, 2024 - The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Luce is a great surprise from me. The wine is powerful and well balanced and a well made for a difficult year. 15.5% alcohol level did stand out but with s concentrated fruits on the palate with a very intense aroma made this wine to be one of the best of the vintage at BdM. Love it.

February 22, 2022 - 2014 Luce della Vite Brunello di Montalcino was powerful and well-structured. The developing Brunello was clear and medium garnet in colour without any sediments. It had been decanted for three hours to reveal profound aromatics of blackberry, black cherry, thyme and lavender herbs, followed by tar, leather, liquorice and a touch of balsamic.

The mouthfeel was dry, intense and full-bodied. The intensity and richness were matched by rather high levels of lively acidity and chalky tannin. Flavours of kirsch, bramble berry and milk chocolate transitioned to anise, black pepper spices and wet stone minerality in a long, robust finish. The alcohol level was at 15.5%. the empty bottle weighed 750 grams.

Given that the 2016 of the same wine is similarly priced on Hong Kong market at the moment, the 2016 is probably a better option as it has more vibrancy, better polish of the tannin and a broader sense of mineral impact. Having said that, the 2014 is still a great wine on its own right.

The vines for the Brunello are planted at high elevation of up to 450 metres, on well-drained soil rich in sandstone and limestone. The alcoholic fermentation is controlled at below 30 degree Celsius, and lasts for twelve days. The skins are macerated for four weeks. The wine spends at least twenty four months in new (10%) and second-fill (90%) Slavonian oak barrels. 20,000 bottles are produced.
