Community Tasting Notes 4

May 8, 2023 - Clean, almost watery color. Extremely closed on the nose at first, then some reductive tones of sulphur (burnt matches), lactic notes and some white flowers emerge. Given a couple of hours in a wide carafe does not improve the wine much. Full bodied attack, but mostly tart lemon, green apples and a chalky feel (and that reductive tone again). Does not give much pleasure in this phase. The aftertaste, however, is extremely long, perhaps - I hope - boding for a more welcoming future. Fascinating wine, but not very pleasant at the moment. Keep for at least five more year and decant for at least half a day before drinking.

May 13, 2020 - In a tasting of Ungeheuer from von Winning, but with a couple of bottles from von Buhl and Burklin wolf for comparison. Brilliant green-yellow colour. A very reductive nose that opens up over the evening, but is not blowing away before the next day. Mostly minerals (very chalky), and a salty tone. Full bodied, almost giving a sweet impression before the acidity kicks in, Green appleas dominate the mouth, in addition to lemons. An acid monster, nicely balanced by sweet fruit, almost like peaches. Hard to drink now, so this will probably earn a higher score in 3-5 years or more. And I guess wines like this are almost immortal.

October 17, 2019 - VDP. Grosses Gewachs Tasting (Army and Navy Club, London): Oaky in the nose, ripe fruit, nutty, brioche, almond, spicy, the palate is fresh, minty, lemon, tropical fruit, pineapple, medium to high acidity, 12.5%, a bit of reduction, medium finish
