Community Tasting Notes 6

May 19, 2021 - Open a few hours, then decanted. Color of rim suggests beginning maturity, though still a dark wine for Sangiovese. Nice nose with cherry predominating but some fresh flowers. On the palate, good depth and flavor but a little muddled.

January 23, 2019 - 4thWednesdays - SommSelect Blind Six- (December 2018 shipment) (Texas Wine School, Houston, Tx): Tasted Blind

A: Pale ruby core with a garnet rim
N: Red sour cherry, violet, earth, mushroom, leather, liquorice, dried herbs, wet leaf and a little smoke. Nose seemed closed to me. Medium (-) intensity but had I waited, would have perhaps given me more.
P: Dry, high acid, high tannn, high alcohol though well integrated, medium (+) intensity and medium (+) finish
C: BLIC? Outstanding quality wine and the structure to improve given further time in bottle.

    Guesses:
Earthy and so Old World. The acid seemed like cool climate and the sour cherries, savory mushrooms and earth led me to Brunello. I didn't get VA on this wine but that wasn't a hinderance to identification.I guessed the year as 2013 and got it right which was mad.
Worth mentioning that IC thought this was medium (+) acid and tannin and long finish. I think some in the tasting group had same calls as me and it nudged them to Nebbiolo. I just wasn't getting the power of the florals or the tar to put me in the Nebbiolo camp.

January 23, 2019 - Tasted blind. Clear, bright, medium ruby-garnet with an orange hue on the rim. The nose is clean, medium in intensity and relatively closed, with aromas of tart red cherry, black cherry, dried roses, dried herbs and just a hint of baking spices. The oak treatment is fairly neutral, indicative of aging in large Slavonian oak casks. The nose is developing. The palate is dry, with medium (+) acidity, medium (+) tannins and high alcohol (14.5%). The palate is consistent with the nose with, to me, a slight note of tar and licorice which pointed towards Nebbiolo. Full-bodied, with medium (+) flavor intensity, and length. This is not as big or extracted as Brunello from some of the other more famous producers, so it is approachable early. It needs plenty of air to open up and has a long future. 89 for now, with the potential to go up a point or two.

This Brunello could be mistaken for a Barolo, except that the tannins are not as high as a Nebbiolo, the acid is a touch lower than a Nebbiolo and the color is a little too deep.

January 1, 2019 - Not a lot of stuffing in there. The flavors that are there are already soft as if produced for early market. Some off plastic texture and aroma but otherwise soft, round acid. I’m not complaining I had this Brunello...but I’ve had better ones too.

November 27, 2018 - Classic but light sangiovese nose with cherry, basil and some spice. Nothing on the nose jumps from the glass. Good acidity, but lacking tannins at this early stage. Medium length, but clearly gets somewhat flabby on the finish.
