March 29, 2023 - Very whole bunch influenced. Lean, bright and focused. Savoury, but fragrant pinky fruit gives this a very classy feel.

September 17, 2021 - A point at the moment. Supple, developed, yet still vibrant, with powdery tannins. First rate nose that is classic Central Otago: black cherry, mineral, earth, and a touch of French oak. Really classy. An easy 91 for me.

January 15, 2021 - 2016 Grasshopper Rock Pinot Noir Earnscleugh Vineyard was developing, well-balanced and mineral-driven. The Central Otago Pinot Noir was pale ruby in colour without any sediments. Two hours of in-bottle aeration gave expressive aromas of dark cherry, bramble, raisin and mint, followed by earth and soy sauce (credits to Alison).

The mouthfeel was dry and medium-bodied, with medium levels of fine tannin and balanced acidity. The savoury quality on the mid-palate were quite lucrative. Flavours of cranberry, mushroom and saline minerals persisted in a rather long earthy aftertaste. The alcohol was at a modest level of 13.3%.

August 5, 2020 - This Central Otago Pinot Noir was shared among wine friends, when we probably had too much great wine in an evening. The tasting notes were written on the following day from memory.

2016 Grasshopper Rock Pinot Noir Earnscleugh Vineyard was savoury, earthy and well-balanced. The Central Otago Pinot Noir was clear and medium ruby in colour without any sediments. Freshly uncorked, there were aromatics of fresh wild strawberries, earth and mint, with an undertone of riper fruits, like ripe dark cherries and raisins. The mouthfeel was dry and medium-bodied, balanced with medium-high level of fresh acidity and medium level of finely grained tannin. Flavours of dark cherries, raspberries, mushroom, herbs and subtle gaminess filled the long savoury finish. The alcohol was at a modest level of 13.3%.

Yuuji commented that it was much fresher and balanced from his expectation of Central Otago Pinot Noir, as he came across overtly jammy and alcoholic (15%) expressions in the past. I was lucky of me to have never encountered jammy and heavy New Zealand Pinot so far.
