April 2, 2022 - Sierra de Gredos Tasting (Concord, MA): Pretty, pale and translucent. Most mineral and contemplative of the six Sierra de Gredos granachas in the flight. Group's #2, my #4, but I think I may have underestimated it when surrounded by so many more extraverted wines. It's also easy to imagine that this wine is light based on its appearance, when it's actually quite rich.

    February 19, 2022 - 45 days maceration with daily feet treatment :-)
11 months maturation in 500L French oak barrels.
6 months stabilisation in steel tanks.
Spontaneous fermention, no filtration, and very little sulphur.

3h decant, not sure if necessary.
Transparent red colour, reminded me of a thin German Pinot Noir.

Very interesting wine, this cool climate style Garnacha.Fresh acidity paired with light red fuits (cranberry, raspberry?), pleasant tannins, some oak, and hints of vanilla.
Different from most Spanish wines I had before but very nice indeed!

November 28, 2020 - Similar experience to the last bottle, but I think I like it better this time around. It’s a lovely, lifted expression of Garnacha, but not quite on the same level as the Vina Bonita. There’s a slight note of confection / bubble gum that isn’t in the Bonita. Still totally enjoyable though, because that perceived sweetness is kept in check by the tart fruit and acidity.

July 15, 2020 - Interesting to compare this (in the mind) with the Carril del Rey 2016 tasted on 6 July 2020. Both Carril del Rey (south-facing) and Arroyo del Tórtolas (north-facing) are single vineyards in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, both are made from 100% Garnacha and the vinification is similar (macerated for 40 days, matured for 12/14 months in used French oak). The difference between the two wine is remarkable. The Carril is light as a feather (in spite of 14.5% ABV, just like the Arroyo), ephemeral almost, with aromas in the citrus register. The Arroyo is much firmer and more structured, transparent and precise, cooler in style, with tannins which are reminscent of Piedmont (perhaps Pelaverga rather than Nebbiolo), and the aromatic profile is darker, with cherries and blue berries, and notes of tobacco and liquorice root. Aromatic persistence is very good to excellent. Very good now, time in hand.

June 5, 2020 - This is like Barolo made from garnacha but with less acidity, far far less tannin, and sweet but airy fruit. Medium bodied, this is so elegant and hides the 14.5 abv entirely. There is some spice on the finish and minerality that emerged with air. With my sausage orecchiette recipe but with cherry tomatoes, this stood in for something Italian, but matches the freshness of those cherry tomatoes. Outstanding tonight. Could age more for added complexity but it’s elegance and pure joy won me over.
