January 26, 2020 - Nose was gorgeous right from the first pour, but needed some time to unfurl and show more fruit on the finish. After some vigorous swirling a zippy finished balanced the honeysuckles orchard fruits.

November 5, 2019 - Obituary: 1970 Bordeaux: Sauternes without botrytis is like a Ferrari without wheels, it looks pretty but doesn’t go anywhere. The Suduiraut is sweet and orange-y but it’s awfully simple despite plenty of time for any complexity to emerge if it were in there. Okay with dessert, not by itself.

June 16, 2019 - Dessert for Fathers day 2019; my last bottle of the '70 purchased years ago at auction.

Color: deep, burnished gold edging toward amber. Luscious nose of apricots, toffee, butterscotch and creme brulee. Palate still showing a fair amount of sweetness demonstrating how well these old Sauternes can age. Caramel and brown butter mixed with burnt sugar lend some complexity.

Could there be a bit more? I think yes; this year was renowned for having a paucity of botrytis. It's very good -- delicious in fact. But while I think there was some botrytis at Suduiraut, I think this is showing as a very, very good low-botrytis Sauternes from a good vintage produced from plump, healthy, high-quality grapes. A lovely wine and one I would buy again for the bargain price I paid but perhaps not as complex as other vintages.

September 1, 2018 - Fabulous All Sauternes Tasting Dinner: Part Deux (Brad's Place, St. Paul, MN): Dark golden orange color. Drank a glass over an hour. Based on other notes this may not have a been a fully representative bottle. It seemed more angular; maybe that was due to the strong botrytis spice that dominated and seemed to make the finish somewhat bitter. Baked apple, orange marmalade, burnt sugar, a little thin. Some thought there was some heat showing, but it just struck me the aggressive spiciness. Scored withheld, but impression is 89/90.
