March 13, 2024 - The 1998 Clos des Ducs has a relatively muted nose but a wonderful, mature Volnay springs to life on the palate. This is so full of pure, powdery, deep cherry notes and bits of potpourri, cinnamon, and game with a surprising amount of tannin, I almost wonder if it’s worthwhile waiting longer for the nose to come around. Maybe it never will, but this doesn’t seem in imminent danger of declining.

April 10, 2021 - 11th of 12, opened 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, way off sensational form of last bottle noted in Feb 2016, similar flavour profile with nice energy, bright with lifting acidity, but absence of balancing materiel, austere with unattractive pinched exit, no rush but hard to see upside, though Angerville wines usually take 20+ years to show at best. F (17.5).

1/1/2003 (link)(Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Clos des Ducs) Dark cherry still with purple hints. Nose is reticent but there is red cherry in there somewhere. The palate is cool and silky with very good fruit density, lovely acidity and perhaps slightly harsh finishing tannin. Good, pure length too, I find this an excellent wine, but it will be much better in 3-5 years.
