December 16, 2023 - With Paul Welch. Purchase 1973, my last bottle of the case. Low neck fill. Color was amazing for a wine of this age, and would have guessed 1990 or older based on that. The nose had a little bit of dark fruit, a touch of soy, but was muted. There was fruit left on the palate, which was somewhat lean. Acidity provided structure and tannin was resolved.
All in all, certainly on the downslope, but more than worthwhile.

November 11, 2023 - Amazing how much life is in the tank. Solid structure carrying cassis, a dearth of secondary notes, leather, tobacco, solid tannic structure balanced with nice acidity and finish. Shared over dinner with friends who brought a 75’ Cheval Blanc. The contrast between the 2 was a treat. The Cheval being much more fleshy, soft and round lacking the structure and angularity of the Montrose. Both delicious in their own right and a treat to have them side by side.

November 11, 2023 - Gorgeous rendition of Montrose with plenty of time left. Lots of new and old leather on nose with gravel and cigar tobacco and surprising amount of fruit (cassis). Medium bodied with lots of tannin - needs 30mins to open up and more acid than usual. With air a gorgeous sweet fruit and beef blood. A perfect match with steak! Drink to 2040(!). 95-96pts

September 1, 2023 - With an ullage that made me think twice about this bottle, the 1970 Château Montrose shattered all expectations I had about the wine. Immediately opening up to a nose dominated by smoke and redcurrants, I was excited at the prospect of fruit being intact in this 53 year old bottle. The wine ebbed and flowed on the palette, though, as glass one had notes of strawberries and redcurrants coming through alongside notes of minerality, mushrooms, herbs and licorice, before glass two had more pronounced tertiary notes of cedar. Glass three saw a renaissance of fruit, albeit it over a shorter finish, but as a whole the wine sustained itself over the course of the bottle making it a tantalizing wine to start the weekend with.

May 24, 2023 - Judgement of Paris Tasting and Dinner (V. Mertz - Omaha, NE): From Magnum. Served blind alongside what was later to be revealed as the 1970 Mayacamas. This was universally determined to be from Bordeaux. But what wine and which vintage? The other wine served alongside seemed almost androgynous, relatively speaking, and at least one at the table was absolutely convinced that wine was the 1970 Mayacamas. And if that was this case, then this must be the 1970 Montrose…a wine which nearly epitomizes masculinity in Bordeaux.

A little later in the evening, this was a fun side by side with the 2000 Montrose which was served in a separate blind pairing. Truthfully, they seemed to be at a point where age was only a number. Both were unashamedly masculine with dark fruit, tobacco, and earth with ferrous minerals. Finish was long with great acid. For me, only notable difference between the two was the integration of tannin for which the 2000 was still holding fast. To be honest, both of these wines seem everlasting. The structure is that of Helms Deep and yet, there is juuuuuuust enough balance of fruit to make it worth the wait. That being said, you gotta be patient and/or have generational plans for your cellar. For both, drink now until…2070+?
