March 2, 2024 - The nose is full of cedar and dark fruit. Not exactly sure what this wine is trying to be. Maybe we had an off bottle.

October 30, 2023 - A smart and polished wine that carefully treads between opulence and finesse. Big plummy fruits with plenty of of earthiness and herbaceousness nestled in, it feels classically Merlot. Perhaps a very ripe St Emillion from a warm year comes to mind, but the finish could perhaps use a bit more stucture and has just a touch of sweet edged fruit, but it's very moreish and does wonders with beef.

January 22, 2022 - 4th Saturday Brown Bagger (J&L's): Double blind. Abundant cherry and raspberry fruit with an herbaceous undertone. Picks up a pine sap note with time in the glass. Flavors of black raspberry and red berry fruit. Lingering finish. Got better as it sat. (J&L)

August 3, 2021 - Work dinner in LA.

I used to call Grgich an "old world" style producer; but they're really not. This wine clearly shows long maceration and new oak. Maybe it's a bit more restrained than the "Parkerized" style of some Napa producers; but it's still pretty identifiable as a new world wine.

Ripe blackberry, dark plum, black currant, black pepper, leather, cedar, coffee, vanilla. Full bodied. The "mellowness" of Merlot is still apparent in the acid and tannins, which are both medium.

I would call this wine "opulent" but if you drink stuff like Darioush or Hundred Acre regularly; it probably IS a super restrained old world style Merlot. Anyway, it's good. But it's especially good if you like this style.

October 11, 2020 - This wine is a deep garnet in color with a pronounced intensity aroma. The nose is composed of coffee, rioe plums, stewed blackberries, vanilla, chalk dust, dried leaves, and bubble gum. This wine's acidity is high, tannins are med(+), alcohol is high, body is med(+), and the finish is long. The palate is consistent with the nose. Overall, this is a very good wine that can be drunk now, but has potential for ageing.
