Community Tasting Notes 2

October 27, 2020 - Cuvée MMXVII, Vin de France. Biodynamically farmed Chardonnay, fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, macerated with the skins for 8 months in amphorae, vinified and bottled without any SO2. No fining or filtration. 12,5% alcohol. Total production 890 bottles.

Clear, meadium-deep straw-yellow color with a pale coppery core. Wild, robust and heavily phenolic nose with aromas of bruised apple, rosin, some mine soap tones, a little bit of baked clay, light autumnal notes of forest floor, a hint of cooked rose hips and a touch of sea buckthorn. The wine is dry, robust and quite broad yet somewhat tough and austere on the palate with flavors of savory spice, phenolic notes of resin and pine soap tones, some oxidative bruised apple character, a little bit of stony minerality, light bretty nuances of leather and waxy funk, a sweeter hint of ripe yellow fruits and a touch of caramel. The wine is lacking a bit freshness and structure, thanks to the medium acidity and almost nonexistent tannins. The finish is savory, somewhat funky and showing quite little fruit qualities in favor of savory phenolic notes of earthy spices, waxy funk, some resinous tones, a little bit of leather and sweeter hints of caramel.

At first the wine is quite dull, tough and angular, but it doesn't take much time for your palate to adjust to the very savory, non-fruity style of this wine. For an orange wine, this doesn't feel particularly complex or impressive, but neither is it as challenging as it initially came across as. It might be that the wine is just in an awkward phase and it could actually benefit from a few additional years of aging. All in all, not the most memorable skin-contact white, but nothing particularly disagreeable either.

September 27, 2019 - One of the most unusual wine I've ever had the initial nose has this very abrasive burnt rubber followed by subtle stone fruits. After a 20 min decant the burnt rubber nose blew off thankfully. One the palette it has clear orange and oxidative notes as it comes off with fine grained tannins, with a heavier texture. There are notes of stone fruits and this artificial orange flavor that reminds me of Tang (the orange drink many years ago). The wine was very interesting and for me, despite having taken a lot of wine making risks did not come off as faulty just very different. It was however the most divisive wine amongst my company.
