December 13, 2018 - Still tight after 8 years. After 2 hours in a decanter it started to open up nicely. Lots of herb, dry spice, and small berries. Full body, big tannins, intense and complex flavours. Will grab a couple more and try it again in a few years. Great value for a Taurasi.

October 28, 2018 - I'm generally a big fan of the Aglianico-based wines of Campania and Basilicata, including the highly-regarded sub-region (of the former) of Taurasi, but this has to be one of the strangest wines I've ever tasted. It's not that it's bad. On the contrary, at eight years of age, and certainly in its extended prime, there's a nice combination of mellow aromas and flavours, soft fine-grained tannins, and lively but not excessive acidity, all a result of the aging. There's also genuine Aglianico character with its combination of dark fruit (cherry, blueberry, blackberry), mild pepper, cocoa, and floral and mineral notes. In this case, it's the florality and minerality that really stand out. So why so strange? Because while it all seems to work well, there's an odd floral, pot pourri funkiness, a sense of dried, decaying roses, that pervades the experience, offering an overwhelming perfume that ebbs and flows with everything else. At times it works, at times it doesn't, and while dried flowers are also varietally characteristic, too much is simply too much. And it's certainly not great value at $37 in Ontario, as this falls well short of great Taurasi. I'm giving it an 88, but the ebbing and flowing funk means it falls within a broader 85-89 range, and at worst seems even lower. There are just too many other good things about it to ignore.
