Community Tasting Notes 1

    August 9, 2019 - 14% alcohol.

Moderately deep and somewhat developed lemon yellow color. Very big, ripe and rather concentrated nose with a waxy and somewhat honeyed overtone followed by quite unctuous aromas of fresh pineapple, overripe apricot, some red apple, a little bit of beeswax, light stony mineral notes and somewhat thinner-or-gasoline-like streak of alcohol. The wine is full-bodied, oily and very tactile on the palate with quite unctuous, weighty mouthfeel and rather concentrated, juicy flavors of fresh pineapple and tart nectarine, some spicy red apple, a little bit of beeswax, light mineral notes of stony bitterness, an exotic hint of papaya and a developed touch of nuttiness. The alcohol both tastes and lends some warmth to the palate. The wine is surprisingly high in acidity despite pronounced ripeness, making the fine feel remarkably balanced for its size. The finish is ripe, oily and somewhat warm with rich and juicy yet relatively dry flavors of fresh pineapple, nectarine, some spicy wildhoney, a little bit of stony minerality, a little bit of apple peel bitterness, a vibrant hint of mirabelle plum and a touch of almond-driven nuttiness. The rich, warm and slightly bitter aftertaste carries on for a long time.

An impressively sized, enjoyably developed and pretty complex white Burgundy with some obvious age. However, the wine also feels rather heavy as it obviously emphasized power and concentration over drinkability - to the point that tasting it blind you'll more likely think of Viognier than Chardonnay. I thought some rich food would pair well with such a rich wine, but a chanterelle risotto didn't pair that well with the wine - the bold flavors overwhelmed the taste of the risotto and made its alcohol stick out even more. I guess the wine would perform much better with some other dish. Stylistically the wine feels like it is peaking or very close to its apogee - it might continue to develop a little bit more from here, but it definitely does not call for any further cellaring. Taking all into account, this was still a steal at mere 8,90€.
