June 25, 2022 - Confraria Induction Trip; 6/19/2022-6/26/2022 (Porto, Portugal): Aged three years in barrel. Light golden-yellow in color. White peach, caramelized banana, and light herbs on the nose. The palate shows tons of rich honey and citrus, along with some noticeable spices. Good balance overall.

January 12, 2017 - Pouring a deep orange-rust colour, like reddish-tinted blood orange, this Lágrima ("tears") offers an initial alcoholic whiff and aromas of raisin, honey, honeysuckle, orange, apricot, and, coming later, rosewater, all replayed on the palate with wood, black pepper, hazelnuts, and raspberry. Made from the Malvasia Fina, Códega, Gouveio, and Rabigato varietals, a blend of wines aged from two to five years in oak vats (with an average age of three), it has a lovely smooth mouthfeel that isn't quite as thick as you might expect and tannic dryness on the palate that halts the sweetness that, given that this is the sweetest style of port, prevails to that point, as well as vibrant acidity and a real sense of freshness overall. There are various elements that suggest late-harvest Riesling, medium-dry sherry, and young tawny port, but it stands well on its own as a very sippable and admirably complex white port, even if it disappointingly lacks much in the way of depth or length, a very pleasurable experience for my first Lágrima, drunk over a number of days after opening, and certainly a genuine bargain at just $17 in Ontario.

Addendum: I have to give this its due. It just gets better and better after opening, at least over the period of a couple of weeks during which I drank it. (It's also better, and quite refreshing, with a good chill.) After several days, with improvement throughout that period, it developed a more honey-like texture, pronounced dried apricot on the nose, and more prominent flavours generally, and it went from having minimal length to quite impressive length that made it not just refreshing but substantial as well, worthy of relaxed contemplation after a meal. I'll bump it up from 88 to 89, but an argument could be made for 90. It's that good.

August 7, 2008 - Drank with CSW friends. Excellent. Smooth. Served chilled. Hazelnut notes

October 15, 2004 - Highly reminiscent of Pineau des Charentes, if a little more unctuous. Yellow raisins predominate, perhaps a bit of apricot as well. Tea? I would prefer a little more acidity though.
