January 30, 2024 - HMCs bottle brought to the table after a 2 hour double decant then sitting in the open bottle for about an hour til we got to taste it.

Initial nose on opening for the decant was very Cab Franc-ish with green/herbal notes dominating. These faded over time, disappeared completely at about 4 hours of air then slightly re-emerged at the end of the evening, approaching 7-8 hours of total airtime.

The palate was red fruited with a hint of spice along with oak and still some tannins. This bottle not quite what the last few have been. We speculated it may be in an in-between phase right now. I'd hold bottles for a few more years if you have them as air did not seem to help as much right now. 92-93 for me.

July 23, 2023 - I drank two bottles of Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso during my five weeks in Italy. The comp at the time - the one that came to mind immediately - was Detert. I will stick with my guns after opening this bottle, although Detert is quite a bit sweeter and more lush. Coravin. One hour in the glass. Peak at two hours. Graphite. Excellent wine, with beef ribeye. I need to taste the two wines side by side; that would be fun. Also, absolute gem on day two, albeit very American in style compared to Paleo.

May 7, 2023 - Two years since my last bottle and this is the last of my '16 stash. Opened last night as we all needed one more glass while playing cards after dinner. Repour stopper immediately put into the last half bottle to keep for drinking today.

Last night.....immediately accessible and singing. Needed zero time to be ready. Nose is of dark fruit, a little brambly whiff of florals but no green or sage as it had, when younger. The darkest opaque ruby in the glass. Dark, silky smooth fruit, smooth, sweet polished tannins and a very balanced palate. A little coffee bean. It has integrated quite well and now I wish I had kept my hands off the earlier bottles, which I gave 95s to. Today, the 2nd half of the bottle is as beautiful if not more. Perfect preservation overnight with the Repour stopper. Because it can be a bit reductive to the wine for a short time right after removal, I find the last glass to have a tad of balsamic caramel on the palate along with the dark coffee bean. I love that. It makes the wine richer, creamier, too. After an hour it returns to exactly where it was last night with no degradation. 95 last night, 96 today. A beautiful wine.

May 5, 2022 - Pleasant wine, but still rustic. Tasted green pepper, earth, tobacco, and dark red fruit. I found the tannins a bit astringent after two hours in the glass. The wine was opened with a coravin. I tasted it over a two week period and the last glass was the best. The tannins were more resolved and the underlining dark berry fruit was sweet. I would recommend holding this for a couple of years at which time after a four hour decant it will approach a 95 score.

February 20, 2022 - Decanted for 2 hours then returned the wine back into a cleaned bottle and returned to cellar temperature at 55 degrees in a U-Line U-Chill. Consumed over the next 4 hours out of a Grassl 1855 stem. The wine was paired with a Flannery Dry Aged New York Strip.

The nose was of flowers, red fruits and earth tones. The palate was of strawberries, cherries, green bell pepper and minerality. The tannins were medium to high and the body was medium to full. It had good medium to medium+ acidity. It was well balanced.

The wine is in a good drinking window now with a decent decant but it will only get better over the next decade+. If you have patience there is no need to rush this bottle but if you are curious and are itching to pop a cork, there is no shame in drinking this bottle now as long as you have time to introduce some air and its not just a PnP.
