June 20, 2022 - one of four bottles enjoyed on a thursday night.
This was up against some stiff competition, a Carter Carter 2016 cab(95pts), and a Myriad beckstoffer georges 111, (95pts). A glass was left and put in the fridge. On Sunday night I finished the bottle, it was excellent, strong cherry, smooth, balanced, very enjoyable.

October 22, 2021 - All of my notes from 10/18/21 apply. However, this 375ml bottle was not decanted and was a PnP but poured through a screen based on my last bottles level of sediment. The wine was consumed out of a Sensory glass with vigorous swirling.

I have determined this is not my style of wine. In addition to what I tasted the first time, I was also picking up stewed plums and prunes. There was not much depth. If I had to compare it to another wine, it would probably be in the same vein as Caymus, also from Rutherford, but at least the 2017 vintage is a step below the most recent bottles of Caymus I opened (2013 and 2014). I don't think the 2017 vintage was kind to this wine, as it wasn't to many other wines as well.

If you own any 2017 Salus, I suggest a good decant or a few more years in the cellar. I do not recommend a PnP, as this bottle did not show as well as the last bottle I had that was decanted.

October 18, 2021 - The 2017 is a decent wine for great causes. I know it has been mentioned in prior Cellar Tracker vintage notes but I'm going to mention it again for this vintage. A portion of the revenue from this bottle goes to support mental health research. Specifically, the funds support One Mind a nonprofit created by the Staglin's in 1995 to support their son's diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Today, One Mind has become a leading nonprofit in brain health research committed to healing the lives of people impacted by brain illness and injury. Now their son is the President of One Mind.

    Onto the wine:

88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.

The cork was popped on a 375ml bottle and slow oxed for approx. 2 hours. Unexpectedly, there was a lot of sediment in the bottle, in the decanter and ultimately in the glass (no screen used when decanted). It was then decanted for approx. 60 minutes at cellar temp 55 degrees. The decanter was removed from the cellar temp for approx. 30 minutes to allow the wine to raise its temp to the high 50s/low 60s. The wine was consumed over the next hour out of a Glasvin Expression wine glass.

The aroma was moderately muted. There was some red and blie fruit, spice and herbal aromas. This may be attributed to the lower drinking temperature but it did not become any more aromatic over the hour of consumption. The acidity was slightly tart. The taste was of some red, purple and blue fruits but the fruit flavors were overshowed by the more present vegetal green bell pepper taste. The Rutherford Dust minerality was present. There was also traces of an Italian Olive bitter aftertaste. The body was medium to full with low to medium astringency, which may be attributed to the medium tannin structure. The finish was medium.

I am not sure if what I experienced with this bottle is attributed to the 2017 vintage that had a heat spike at Labor Day and/or the outside possibility of smoke taint or if this is typical for a bottle of Salus regardless to the vintage. Based on previous positive reviews, I'm gonna learn towards my experience with this bottle being more attributed to the 2017 vintage.

My overall impression is that this wine has a great story and a great cause behind it. I have no regrets of purchasing a few of these bottles. However focusing purely on the wine, I suggest seeking out a different vintage. This vintage does not drink like a $115 bottle. There are many other wines that I would gravitate towards at this price point, unless you are purchasing it to support the great cause.
