September 8, 2022 - Two Months in Roma; 9/6/2022-10/28/2022 (Rome, Italy): From the wine list at Al Moro Rome. Normally one of my favorites, but tonight I think this bottle was off although my husband disagreed. To me it seemed a bit musty on the nose and lacking in the rich flavors it usually delivers.

October 22, 2021 - Rome, Florence, Bologna - Delayed 60th birthday trip; 10/19/2021-11/1/2021 (Rome, Florence, Bologna): From the wine list at Cul de Sac (Rome). One of our favorite Italian white wines discovered on a previous trip to Rome - if we see this on a wine list we will always order. A blend of Viognier and Grechetto - for our palates this wine is simply delicious. It has that fuller rich mouthfeel, that you get with Condrieu, but is balanced out with the Italian freshness, minerals and acidity. Bright yellow in color, alluring tropical fruit and a great long finish. Delicious!!

August 7, 2021 - A 50/50 blend of Grechetto and Viognier from vineyards planted in early-to-mid 2000's in Lazio, close to Rome. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Aged on the lees in 1000-liter oak and chestnut casks. 14% alcohol.

Quite deep and moderately concentrated golden yellow color with faint youthful greenish highlights. Rich, sweetish and moderately tropical nose with aromas of banana and apple jam, some herbal spice, light pear compote notes, a little bit of leesy creaminess, a hint of pineapple and a subtle touch of vanilla custard. The wine feels rich, oily and full-bodied on the palate with lush flavors of ripe apricot, leesy creaminess, some pear compote notes, a little bit of stony minerality, light banana tones, a hint of herbal spice and a touch of vanilla custard. The acidity feels moderately high, which is just enough to let the wine feel slightly fat without becoming heavy or ponderous. The finish is long, juicy and quite tropical with a rich aftertaste of pineapple, apricot and banana, some leesy notes of creaminess, light coconut notes, a little bit of stony minerality, a sweet hint of pear compote and a touch of vanilla. The high-ish alcohol makes the wine end on a subtly warm note.

A very ripe, tropical and juicy Italian white that seems to have somewhat obvious oaky notes - vanilla, creaminess, coconut - even when the wine is supposed to be aged in old and (I assume) quite neutral oak casks. Who knows. Has a somewhat Northern Rhône feel to it, most likely from the bold apricot tones and the obvious gras that Viognier seems to bring. Quite enjoyable stuff, but I guess this kind of fat and slightly hedonistic wine might be difficult to pair with most dishes, so its use might be somewhat limited. I made people taste it blind and guess what it might be (it took some time for people to guess Italy, so I guess the wine doesn't speak that much of sense of place) and that might be one of the best use cases for this wine. I suppose this wine won't become a legendary world-class white with age - like the old-school Fiorano whites did - but I've been wrong once or twice before, so there's always the odd chance that this wine might turn into diamonds if given enough time. Although very well-made and enjoyable, the wine still feels perhaps a bit pricey for its quality at 29,90€.

October 20, 2018 - Excellences from Italy (Milano): Light golden yellow.
Intense at nose, with plenty of yellow flowers and ripe fruits.
Alcoholic, but well balanced, with a good acidity and minerality. Persistent alcohol .
