December 28, 2019 - Spanish Reds [ALL @ the least Tempranillo "Blends": 4-Riojas & 2-Castilla y León] (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): “A joint venture between Tempos Vega Sicilia & the Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild, with the philosophy to offer a modern & unique vision of Rioja following the Bordeaux model of a 1st & 2nd wine. 40 yr old Tempranillo, planted @ 3,333 plants/ha, which yielded 3,500 kg/ha (handpicked to 12 kg cases) from 92 ha in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, Ábalos, & El Villar @ 550 m elev; It is produced in s/s casks; part of malolactic fermentation in oak; new oak & single-use barrels, ageing for 12-14 mos determined only by the characteristics of the vintage. It later sits in bottle for >18 mos. 70,928 Bordeaux bottles, 1,042 Magnums, 62 Double Magnums, & 22 Imperials produced & bottled May 2017.”

N: Smoky toast with berries (poss earth?) way underneath; Intensity lurking?

P: LM body; Rndish entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt fairly quickly met by an astringent pucker which stays within hailing distance of the init frt as it morphs into a LONG, BALANCED finish with a potentially elegant tangy/swtness to the dusty tannins. NEEDS through '21, then easily making its 10th. Nicely done. 14.5% ABV; My EXC-/EXC, the higher likely... eventually. 95 pts Tim Atkin (1/1/18), 94 Suckling (12/’18), 93 WA (6/’19), & 16/20 Jancis Robinson (Hemming, 12/3/18). [This vendor's $46.95 puts it in the TOP quartile of wine-searcher's limited, but SKEWED, postings.]

FYI, the U.S. Importer [cf. the link within the "Producer Article" section of this pg], has an educative piece on this joint project, from which the ff'ing is a snippet: “The style of the wines is certainly not ‘traditional’ Rioja – after trials, they decided against AM oak – but the style is not modern ‘alto expresión’ either. Perhaps the term neoclassical is most apt, with complex mineral-infused fruit & discreet oak influences, underpinned by a fine but firm structure.”

October 28, 2019 - No shrinking violet here - huge nose, full of raspberry, lipstick, oak, and herb. So big, plush, polished, and deep. Warm and tannic in the mouth with a richly fruited finish. 70% new oak. 92-93, but how much of that is its beguiling finish that seems to tower over the rest of the component parts?
