Community Tasting Notes 5

June 30, 2023 - Very structured with drying? But fine /grained tannins. Clove, star anise, animal, balsam and red fruits. Refined palate, with some funky notes, a touch of VA, brown butter, and a wonderfully even, concentrated, and structured finish. For all of its opulen fruit, there are some serious tannins lurking underneath! This is brilliant now, but it clearly has the stiffing to evolve and improve over the next 15 years. This is serious wine, and excellent Gigondas. A great expression of Grenache.

April 16, 2023 - Day 1 - 1 hr air only based on notes for the 2019 suggesting this would be open for business relatively quickly. No way. This had a nasty imbalance of excess sweet fruit on the front and an astringent tannic bitterness in the back, so much so that it was hard to believe this was 100% Grenache. But this is my fault for not giving this air and time. We left most of the bottle for the next day, not even really trying too hard to evacuate the bottle.

Day 2 - so much better! Softer, better integrated front to back. Still should leave my other bottles in the dark for a few more years. Good potential here.

    Score : 91+. Relative to expectations: +

February 10, 2022 - This wine is perplexing to me, with two pros loving it as an early riser, who I respect very highly, and yet I find myself unmotivated by what's in the glass today. Its bouquet is subtle, hinting at blood orange, black tea, violette candies and wet slate. This enters the palate smooth, almost creamy, yet becomes quite nervous in feel, coating the senses in liquid lavender tones and blackberry fruit. A caking of minerality lingers as the cheeks pucker from its tannic heft, creating a chewy sensation through the drawn out finale. I bring my nose back to the glass, and at times there's very little there to be found. Maybe I caught the 2017 in an odd phase, because I know the storage was perfect. In the end, I recommend losing this for another five years before checking in again.
