December 9, 2022 - Luke the Director of DTC sales was in Texas and I hosting a small tasting for collectors. At request Luke was generous enough to show a three year vertical 17-19. All of the wines are structured brutes. Showing very little even after a 8 hour double decant.

17 showed very little. Easily the most locked up of the three. There was a time when I thought this might be one of the wines of the vintage but I cannot say that today. Not sure if it's a phase but I'm assuming that is the case. Very tannic and tight. Dark fruits all coiled up.

Knowing the winemaker and the story behind Henry Cornell. These are wines that are going to need a good amount of time to come around. Maybe the better part of a decade.

If you liked 13-15 then these might not be your wine. Totally different animal.

    Hold

December 11, 2021 - Day 1 - this is a 93 and although it is drinking pretty well as an infant, I think this will be a rockstar in 3 to 4 years. Pretty good balance with a light to medium dryness and good depth of red fruits (raspberry and cherry/dark cherry). Probably headed towards 95-96 in 2025. Cheers

November 17, 2021 - Very deep magenta color. Sautéed raspberry and Melba toast on the nose. Smooth, dry, slightly acrid sensation on the palate. Firm tannins on the longish finish.

This is a victim of the vintage. I know it’s heresy, but I think there’s some subtle smoke taint here.

September 20, 2021 - Had alongside 18 Accendo Laurea for comparison.

Laurea- approachable but still young and would benefit from bottle time. Nose is fruity and balanced. Picked up red fruit, almost strawberry at times. Tannin was firm but not overwhelming. Mild weight overall with good finish. Very enjoyable.

Cornell- deeper / darker fruit. Pleasant nose. Very aromatic. Tannin presence early and strong. Healthy decant or a couple years in bottle to soften edges. Also very good and nice comparison.

Group of 4 tasted together. Split 2-2 on preference. Recommend either (or both)

September 3, 2021 - I decided to pull the cork on Friday after Coravining a glass on Sunday. Small pour into a Zalto bdx glass and the rest into a Reidel magnum decanter. The first glass poured from the bottle was night and day different from the coravin pour on Sunday. I'm assuming the gap created a void for some change. The fruit had gained weight and the sample from the glass resulted in a wow! Handed the glass to my wife and I said "try this!" Another wow, that is really good! Placed the decanter in the cellar and headed out for a run at memorial park while the ox worked it's magic.

One hour later this 2017 was expressive aromatically with a core of savory dark cherry red fruit. A beautiful long finish of menthol tobacco and licorice. In the glass was a kaleidoscope of deep ruby and garnet. Silky tannins with no harsh edges. This is one of the wines of the 2017 vintage for me so far. Alongside the Kinsman bottlings.

Opened alongside Julien Fayard 2018 Martinez.

If you're not following this project & Francoise Peschon, you're missing out.

96+ with a serious decant. Room for upside.
