Community Tasting Notes 2

  • Alex G. Likes this wine:

August 12, 2019 - Raspberry and strawberry dominate, fine grained tannin. This is tasty, with ample stuffing to improve. I suspect this will be better in 2-3 years.

    January 21, 2019 - 13% alcohol.

Youthful, dark ruby color that permits some light through. Very open, fruit-forward and somewhat sweet-toned nose with aromas of ripe black raspberries, damp humus, some red cherries, a little bit of stony minerality and a hint of licorice root. The wine is full-bodied and juicy on the palate with powerful, dry flavors of ripe wild strawberries and red cherries, some plummy tones, a little bit of stony minerality, light sweet notes of boysenberry jam, a hint of earthy spice and a touch of blueberry. The wine feels quite concentrated and from the weightier end of Beaujolais with the structure relying more on the medium-to-moderately high acidity than on the ripe and round tannins that contribute only quite little to the structure. The finish is ripe, juicy and gently grippy with bold flavors of plums, succulent boysenberries, some strawberry jam, a little bit of licorice and a hint of stony minerality.

A rich, open and expressive Beaujolais with good emphasis on clean, well-delineated and super-juicy fruit. Very nice stuff, although I prefer my Morgons a bit less fruity and more structure-driven; this is a ripe and accessible Gamay that lacks that tannic backbone that makes the best Morgon wines both so great and so ageworthy. Nevertheless, a lovely expression of Cru Beaujolais from the bigger yet more easy-drinking end of the spectrum. Perhaps a bit pricey for the style at 27,90€, though...
