March 26, 2020 - Very flinty nose. Uninteresting finish. Might have been defective

September 21, 2019 - Sunfish Cellars Grand Tasting (Just $10) (Sunfish Cellars/I Nonni Minneapolis, MN): Blueberries, spice, pepper, floral and earth. Medium plus finish. Solid wine for under $30.

August 29, 2019 - Tasted blind. Slightly cloudy, deep ruby wine with a purple core and a slight garnet hue not the rim. The nose is clean, medium in intensity, with aromas of black fruit, red fruit, green pepper, green herbs and a fair amount of vanilla and sweet baking spices indicative of a year of oak aging. The nose is developing. The palate is dry, consistent with the nose, with flavors of black currant, black plum and black cherries. The acidity and tannins are medium (+). The alcohol is high (14.5%). Overall, the body, flavor intensity and length are medium plus. The wine has good concentration and depth and a rich mouthfeel. The finish has a slight bitterness, with a dark chocolate and espresso note. It is drinking well now and should continue to improve with a couple more years of cellaring. very good QPR.

This wine had everybody stumped, although everybody agreed that it was quite nice. Most of the indicia pointed to a moderate to warm climate and New World. Possible varieties based on color and aromatics included Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc blend, Malbec, or Carmenere. The green notes tend to rule out Malbec, and the intensity tends to rule out Cabernet Franc. I made the mistake of focusing on the oak treatment and Old World style of winemaking (and overlooking the color and all the black fruit) and convinced myself that it was a Rioja Riserva.
