Community Tasting Notes 2

February 10, 2018 - The wine was dark garnet in colour and offered red fruit, dark berries, black currant, prune, cedar box, cocoa, some tobacco, spice, cinnamon, and underbrush aromas on the nose. On the palate, the wine showed crunchy red fruit, chocolate, tobacco, spices, cinnamon and some liquorice as well as herbal and vegetal notes, with fresh, lively acidity, well-integrated tannin and very good length of the dark cocoa-bitter finish. The balanced, medium-bodied wine was very smooth, with good concentration and a good, full mouthfeel. This 1994 showed very well tonight. It is lovely now and should continue to drink well over the next 10+ years. Great wine. I agree with forceberry; very highly recommended.

October 25, 2017 - A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese with a bit of Cabernet Franc in the mix. 13% alcohol. Tasted alongside most of the Paleo vintages from 2013 to 1993.

Deep, but quite translucent black cherry color with a matured orange hue. Somewhat developed, yet still surprisingly youthful and remarkably vibrant nose with aromas of ripe dark fruit, some fresh blackcurrant, a little bit of sweet dried dark berries, a hint of raisin and a touch of cigar box. The wine is full-bodied, silky and smooth on the palate with complex and remarkably youthful flavors of fresh blackcurrant, ripe plums, some wizened pruney dark fruits, a little bit of raisin, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of leafy sous-bois. Overall the wine is remarkably structured and textural for its age with mouthwatering acidity and pronounced, grippy tannins. The finish is long, leafy and somewhat bitter with intense flavors of pruney dark fruits, some sour plums, a little bit of cigar box, hints of tart dark berries and a touch of raisin. The ample tannins make the wine and on an astringent, mouthdrying note.

A stunning vintage of Paleo that is in a beautiful phase right now, but still manages so take me by surprise with its vibrant and almost paradoxically youthful fruit. The matured notes have crept in there, so you won't definitely mistake this wine for a young one, but compared to the younger 1990's vintages of Paleo, this is still remarkably younger in style. An extraordinary effort, really, and I can guarantee that the wine will at least keep, if not develop, for more than a decade. Very highly recommended.
