February 20, 2020 - Can't believe I missed this gem of a wine. The 2016 was obviously golden for McLaren Vale, especially compared to the '17 which is better to be forgotten in my opinion. Dark, inky red in the glass. Aromatics explode the moment you open the bottle - sweet black berry fruit, plum, cinnamon, Moroccan spice. Broad and juicy on the palate, not showing insane complexity, but offering lots of richness and grip. This is exactly what I came for. Superb value, love it.

June 24, 2019 - 2 weeks in Australia with a stopover in Singapore; 6/14/2019-7/1/2019 (Singapore, Sydney, Adelaide, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills): Tasted at the winery. 100% Mataro in neutral oak. Pretty nose. Juicy and savory purple fruit.

June 24, 2019 - Return to Aus; 6/23/2019-7/5/2019 (Adelaide, South Australia wine regions, Tassie, Yarra, etc.): This is the first in the line-up that gets held back an extra year in bottle to give it some more time to integrate (most of the others we were trying were 2017s). This Mataro was harvested at the same time as the GRM and as a result is slightly less ripe than it might have been if the grapes being harvested were just Mataro. There's again a dark and depth to this. Even with the extra age it comes across as quite a bit younger than the other wines and I get the feeling could benefit from perhaps a few more years in bottle. It's got the darker blue and black fruits but nothing is overdone. I could see this being very tasty with a bit more time.
