July 19, 2023 - We liked it, but…. It’s hard to describe how intense and acidic this was, not to mention brain-sucking dry, even more so than barolo. Felt like high alcohol but was only 14%. Yet there was something still enjoyable with sharp berry flavors and some cedar notes. Mystifying. My guess is we consumed it 10 years too early. We drink the 2015 and 2016 Reserva often and love it, so was a bit taken aback by The Penas Aladas.

April 5, 2023 - Showing some development with garnet hue at the rim of the glass, the 2013 Peñas Aladas presents a dark but elegant nose. Expressive aromas of black cherry, blackberry, roasted meat, nutmeg and black truffle waft out of the glass. Powerful and refined on the palate with incredible freshness and a long lasting finish. Drinking very well now but will continue to develop. Beautiful wine.

    WSET notes:

    Deep garnet.

Pronounced on the nose with black cherry, blackberry, cedar, smoke, meat, forest floor and truffle. Developing.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. High acidity, medium plus body, medium alcohol, high tannins, long finish.

Can drink now but has potential for ageing.

October 21, 2020 - Spanish Tasting (Bistro Cocotte, Haberfield): Plenty of very polished oak initially, a touch of struck match, ripe but pretty blackberry, sweet spice, alcohol warmth and a smidge of sour red berries on the nose. Softly juicy berried fruits then plenty of persistent, drying silky textured tannins and a fair whack of alcohol. That oak is very present here as well from a flavour perspective. The fruit does persist with the alcohol - almost like blackberry compote with a like of vodka. I think I understand what they're trying to do - there is the basis of elegance here but all that alcohol and oak...perhaps it just needs time?

September 8, 2018 - The Ribera del Duero Gran Reserva Penas Aladas is dark and intense, showing animal musk, crushed stone, and dark soil tones backed by notes of herbal-infused blackberry, blueberry, wild flowers, and hints of tangerine. On the palate, I'm finding silky, creamy textures with zesty spiced red fruits, lavender, saline-minerality and inner soil tones. It's as if the nose transposes perfectly to the palate. The finish is long, showing saturating black cherry and a salty flourish, with a coating of fine tannin. I am amazed by how intense and layered, yet fresh the ‘13 Gran Reserva is today.
