January 6, 2024 - Wine Bros: A Study of Syrah (Cowford Chophouse): From a magnum. First time with this wine which we really bought because we wanted to show what age in the new world looks like with Syrah and this didn’t disappoint. Wine was drinking well. It’s more muted than the others we’ve had up to this point but to me that’s just the age. A bit more secondary flavors to it. Still has some fruit. A bit quieter in style but still enjoyable and very just classic.

December 29, 2018 - From magnum. Fully mature, tannins completely absorbed, still deeply colored, silky texture. Didn't have the remarkable complexity of the 750ml in 2005, but a lovely wine nonetheless.

September 3, 2018 - Enjoyed this magnum over four nights, nose of mostly red cherry and raspberry but some black cherry and black berry, roasted meat and mushroom, same on the palate, big body, fully mature but wonderful drinking, great winemaker and great wine, better the second night than the first but slightly oxidized on night four, long, long finish, and terrific aftertaste.

February 15, 2014 - Drank this alongside a 2005 Levet Chavaroche, and found the two remarkably similar, despite the differences in age, grape varietals, terroir, etc. 25 years of aging have rendered the Orion lush and, for me, somewhat muted - the tannins completely subdued - an older wine that still was full, very full, of fruit.
I would encourage anyone with this wine to drink it now.

February 15, 2014 - Decanted an hour prior to serving. The tell-tale Thackrey licorice and eucalyptus aromas jump out, along with black fruits, cassis, and a slight mustiness. Is this corked? There's no evidence of TCA on the palate, which is fully resolved with flavors of black cherry, plum, and black raspberry. The mustiness never completely blew off, which prevents a higher rating, but this was absolutely delicious and at the peak of its development. Drink it now. Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.
